Freer, TX Through The Years

Updated on June 8, 2011

Welcome to Freer, Texas

Our move to Freer, TX was a necessity. I had allowed Walter to buy a semi-truck. When I told him to go for it, everything was going well for the trucking industry. I had done a lot of research before I had said yes. We would have made good money with both of us driving. We bought our truck, a 1998 Freight-liner Century, the end of August 2000 and leased it on with Wiley Sander's Truck Lines the beginning of September. We were out on one of our first series of runs when 9/11 hit. Everything for the trucking industry went downhill. Gas prices rose and the truck needed so many repairs that we weren't making any money. All of the money earned by the truck were put back into expenses. Finally came the day that the truck was repossessed (we had already lost our home) and my Mother-In-Law was the only one that would take in my husband, myself and our 4 truck dogs. It just happened she lived in Freer, TX at the time. We lived with her about a year before we were able to get our own place.

An Oilfield Town

Called Freer, TX

Freer, TX grew because of the oilfield around the location. The very first oil well to be drilled in the Freer area was in 1860 but turned out to be unproductive. Oil was again found in the Freer area in 1907. They tell us that we are having another oilfield boom around here for the next 6 years. My husband would love to be able to get a hotshot truck and trailer to become part of this boom. You will mainly find companies around here that have to do with oilfield needs.

Our children really don't have anywhere to go around here unless it is school or town sponsored. The theater closed down a long time ago. They used to have a place called The Dash that they could go to but I think that has closed down also. So when it comes time for them to graduate, they either go into the businesses around here to do with the oilfields or move on to other locations to get better jobs. Most of us here are middle aged or older couples or singles.

This event started in the mid 1960's but didn't become named the Rattlesnake Roundup until the early 1970's.

I have had people see that I am from Freer, TX and they ask me about the Rattlesnake Roundup and if it is still around. Yep, it is still here and waiting for you to come. Come the end of April 2012, we will be having our next Rattlesnake Roundup. Make sure you let me know you are coming so we can meet up and get to know everyone.

Muy Grande Deer Contest

Held In Freer, TX

Muy Grande started having this contest back in 1965 with the category the "widest spread". The only problem was that when this contest was over and the winner requested his prize, there wasn't one. So he gave a prized wristwatch as the prize. Winner went away happy.

Since then the Muy Grande Deer Contest has become very well know. They now have many more categories than the one they started off with. They have a men's, women's and childrens division with separate categories under those.

Other Information About

Freer, TX

Normally our little town is quiet. But, come deer hunting or bird hunting seasons, our motels and RV slots are filled up. This is also true for the Rattlesnake Roundup and our Fourth of July Festival. Since the oilfield boom, we have had a lot of our RV spaces filled to the content of the RV slot owners.

Flat Stanley Visits - Freer, TX

This is a series of pictures that my husband's niece set up to send to one of her cousins for her school.

The whole idea of this project is for the child to color in a picture of Flat Stanley and send him to friends and family all over the world. The person receiving Flat Stanley will then take him on a tour of the town and send those pictures back to the child. This way the child has a project folder of Flat Stanley visiting places all over the world. If you should ever receive one of these, by all means complete and send the project back to the child. The children have fun showing all the places that Flat Stanley has visited that was sent back to them.
